How to Install Virtualbox and get it working in ubuntu

So I installed Virtualbox on my windows computer and it worked perfectly of course. Then I tried to install it in Linux, and it wasn't so easy. It wasn't the installing part that is hard just download the .deb from here, install and restart x. But while installing it tells you something about how you won't be root, you have to change a certain folder to root. So the way you do that is open a terminal and type in this

sudo chown (username) /dev/vboxdrv

For (username) type in the user you want to have access. You should be set to install a guest os. As always if you have any problems post a comment and I'll try to help you out as much as I can.

Ripping cd's to mp3 in Ubuntu

I Finnaly figured out how to rip cd's to mp3 in ubuntu. It seemed harder then it should be and i thought i had to install Lame, But that isn't the case. What you really want to do is open up a command line and type this.

Sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse gstreamer0.8-lame gstreamer0.8-mad

After installing those packages run sound juicer that comes with ubuntu go to Edit -->Preferences. At the bottom there should be a drop down menu. Click it and choose CD Quality, MP3 (Mp3 Audio). Everything should be good after that, just pop in a cd and rip it. If anyone has any problems just post a comment and i'll try to help you out as best as i can.

Portable Apps Suite

So i got a new thumb drive and started thinking about a cool launcher that would load all the applications i had on the thumb drive. Sorta like the U3 Launcher that other thumb drives have pre-installed. Just not as shitty and doesn't take over your thumb drive. So i found the Poartable apps suite. You can install Portable applications and then when you plug in your thumb drive you can tell it to open up in the portable apps launcher. Theres some tutorials one how to add other applications that aren't on their site but i couldn't get it to work. If you figure it out be sure to comment and leave some steps, ones that make more sense then the ones I've read.

Graboid

Graboid is a program that shares files such as movies, television shows, anime shows, and adult content. However you can't just download it by going to their site. It's in beta form right now and the only way to get a invite is if you signed up a while ago. eventually Beta users will get invites, therefore being able to invite other people. This is sorta an alternative to joost but you don't upload and download things, you just download. It's sorta like limewire, emule, and Kazaa but like it says on the graboid site these programs are worse then Graboid because

Painfully long waits
Poor organization
Fake files and spyware
and Limited content

I've been using it since Monday and I've liked it more then joost. There were some problems which were easily fixed from getting information from the Graboid Blog located here. So far i haven't found anything wrong that they haven't already, which is pretty good for it being beta software. When i get invites i will give them out to anyone that asks, via comments or email, or whatever way you can contact me.

I stumbled upon myspacemp3.org where you can download songs off myspace music profiles. It used to be sorta complicated to do that but with this site it's way easy. All you have to do is type in the bands url(without the myspace.com/ part) and you can download all the songs they have posted. Currently the site isn't working but hopefully it will be soon.

I found this cool blog that has cd's to sample. They are the full cd's and should be deleted within 24 hours. This site is great if you heard one song from a bands album and wanted to hear the rest before you go buy it. This site would have came in handy for me back in the day when i bought cd's more. In case you didn't know, there's a lot of free stuff on the internets. It's just a matter of finding them. Luckily, there are several sites to gather all the free stuff and tell you where it all is. The site I like the most is AbsurdlyCool Freebie Finder. The thing I like most about this particular site is that it seems to find a lot more free stuff than any other site I've used. Another reliable source(but not as reliable) is Ben's Bargains. The good thing about this site is it doesn't have just a free section but a deals, coupons, and rebates sections. It has a lot of other cool things like trackers for game systems and a pc builder section. Out of all of the sites that search out free stuff on the internet for you, I'd recommend both of those as the best.

Asus Eee Pc 701

You might have heard of the new Asus Eee Pc 701 that just came out in Japan June 5th. But if you haven't then here you go. Basically, it's a really small laptop that costs $200. It is meant for taking notes (take note, students) and surfing the web, as well as little bit of music. Here are the specs:

So, as you can see it doesn't have a lot of hardrive or flash disk space. Another turn off I didn't realize at first is that it doesn't have a cd-rom. This means you can't install another distro on it unless you can get it to boot off a usb drive. Unfortunately, I've come to realize that getting that to work is harder then it should be.

They say the release for the U.S. is sometime in Fall. Hopefully things won't change until then. Your best bet is to just get an external HDD to store your music and movies.

Better Gmail Firefox Extension

Better Gmail is a Firefox extension that, well you guessed it, makes your gmail account better. It has options such as adding Google reader or Google calender to your gmail account so you can have all your Google stuff in one place. It also has skins for gmail to make it look better(my favorite is super clean). You can also use it to change the function of clicking on an email link. Instead of going to your desktop email client, it goes to gmail. There are many more tweaks in this program that will be helpful for those that use gmail alot. Touchscreen table

You've probably heard about the touchscreen table thing that's all the buzz right now. Unfortunatly, it's probably going to be a lot of money and only businesses and rich people are going to have them. But, they are pretty freaking awesome and it shows a bright future for technology. Imagine touchscreen walls that allow you to turn on and off the air conditioning or lights, listen to music, or play a game. The possibilities are endless and pretty exciting to think about. HOWTO: Rename a large amount of files at once

So a while back I was using this program called 1-4a Rename. You can change multiple file names into one thing or make it put 1,2,3,4 in front of the different tracks for mp3's. I use it mainly for music albums, because when I download them off the internet it's like_this_and_it's_really_annoying (I know, it's easier on linux...but it sucks) so you can take all those out and put a space for all of them. It's pretty awesome software. The author would like for you to send him an email and tell him what you think of his program. I hope this helps a lot of people in renaming a lot of files.

HOWTO: Get Samba to work like Windows shares

To get Samba & Ubuntu/Debian to share shit with read only permissions in a public folder with no authentication required (just like in unsecure Windows) follow the steps below:

1). First make sure you have the appropriate samba programs installed. In a console type this:
sudo apt-get install samba smbfs
This installs Samba and the Samba file system

2). Then make a directory that will be shared:
sudo mkdir /home/public
You can make the folder any name and place it anywhere. Just remember to change everything instance of /home/public in this guide to whatever you named it.

3). Then change the permissions of that folder to allow bitches to get into it:
sudo chmod 777 /home/public/
4). Then back up the samba configuration file before editing it:
sudo cp /etc/samba/smb.conf /etc/samba/smb.conf_backup
To restore if something breaks, just copy the backup back on over:
sudo cp /etc/samba/smb.conf_backup /etc/samba/smb.conf
5). then edit the smb.conf file, I used gedit:
gksudo gedit /etc/samba/smb.conf

6). You only need to change or append a few things. First find this line
; security = user
and replace it with
security = share
notice that the edited line has no ";"
7). Then append the following lines to the end of the file

[public]
comment = Public Folder
path = /home/public
public = yes
writeable = no
create mask = 0777
directory mask = 0777
force user = nobody
force group = nogroup

8). Run the testparm program to look for errors in the smb.conf file:
sudo testparm

9). Restart the samba daemon:
sudo /etc/init.d/samba restart

There you go. This should work, if it doesn't you can always post a comment and I'll try to help you in anyway possible.

Qttab Bar

So I've been looking at some alternatives for the default windows explorer or whatever its called. But i can never find one that replaces the default so when you click on a folder it opens up that instead of the windows explorer. So i stumbled upon Qttab Bar, it puts a tab bar in the windows explorer. It's not a new explorer but its one step closer, at least now the windows explorer doesn't suck as much as it did.

Torrent Scoop

Ubuntu Studio 7.04

At least Ubuntu Studio 7.04 is finally out. The funny thing is the site is down so you can download from them. luckily someone got it and uploaded it to demonoid.com. So not only do you have to take money from them by using this torrent but you don't have to wait till they get their site back up. Recycle bin in your taskbar?

I've always wanted my Recycle bin to be in the taskbar even before i saw how Linux did that. Then when i saw Linux did it i was like "what the hell?" I tried for a long time to look for a program or some way to do it but i never could find an easy way. But i finally did and it's actually pretty simply. Just follow the steps below.

Right click on your recycle bin and choose "create shortcut."
Now you need to make a folder somewhere ( i named mine "2nd Quick Launch" and put it where the first quick launch is. If you don't know where that is just right click the quick launch bar and choose "open folder")
now put the recycle bin shortcut into the folder you just made
Right click on the taskbar and go to toolbar <>
Then navigate to the folder you just made and choose that folder.
Right click on the taskbar and choose "lock the taskbar" so it doesn't have a check next to it.
Now right click precisely where it says the name of your new folder and uncheck "show text" and " show title"

Now not only do you have a recycle bin in the taskbar but now you have a 2nd quick launch toolbar. You can add anything to it by simple dragging it to the

A couple months ago while using hamachi i thought that it would be cool if hamachi had its own download manager, but it didn't look like they were getting one anytime soon. So i came across FF copy. It was made just for windows networks. You can pause/resume any downloads, which really comes in handy if the user has to go offline. Fast Forward Projects also has 2 other programs you can check them out here. If you really like they're programs you can donate to them at their website in the upper right corner.

Howto: Make an iso from a cd

Do you want to get rid of those annoying cd's you got with your printer, mouse, keyboard, tablet, the list goes on and on. Do you want to keep them in case you need them later too? Well you can store them on your computer until you need them again. With Linux it's very easy just follow the steps below.

1. Insert a cd into your cd-rom
2. Open a terminal
3. Type "dd if=/media/cdrom0 of=$HOME/cd.iso bs=1024" (change /media/cdrom0 to the location of your CD drive).

I think the place after "of=" is the output of the iso you are creating, i didn't try it yet, if anyone does please post a comment and tell me if it is or isn't.

So, if you're like me and you're annoyed by feisty changing the functionality of the backspace button in Firefox and you'd like it to just take you back a page, then you are in luck. Here's how:

1. Type "about:config" in the address bar, and press enter.
2. Type "browser.backspace_action" in the filter bar. One result should come up.
3. Double click it and change the value to zero.
4. Close the configuration window, and it should work

Pidgin 2.0/.Deb files

Pidgin 2.0 Finally came out, if you haven't heard yet Gaim changed it's name to Pidgin because aim was being a bitch and kept trying to sue them. Hence why Gaim 2.0 had so many betas. But finally Pidgin is out, but Ubuntu doesn't update its repositories as soon as they should. They only update every new release (once every 6 months). So you could compile it yourself. Which isn't very hard, but i tried and got an error message so instead of trying to fix it i just got a .deb file. You can get the .deb file for Pidgin 2.0 here. Also If you have any other programs that you can't compile or just what a .deb file you might want to check this site out.

Digg Goes to Hell

Most of you have probably heard of what happened over at digg. But in case you haven't this is what happened. The community of digg have taken over, and Kevin Rose(founder of digg) has let them. What happened you might ask? Someone posted the encryption key of the now hacked HD DVD. It made it to the front page but was removed. The owners of the AACS sent digg a cease and desist letter. Someone noticed the story was gone and posted it again, and again it was taken down, here is the mirror. Because of the massive activity digg was down for about 10min. Now people are submitting the key over and over, posted anger comments and digging the story every second. So what does Kevin Rose do? He posts a blog mainly saying that he won't delete it and will deal with the consequences. "If we lose, then what the hell, at least we died trying." Is what he said. So lets fight this DRM bullshit and show them how powerful the people are.

I found a interesting site where you get paid to read emails. its called Hits4Pay. You get paid 2 cents per email you read. You also can refer people and you get 1 cent for every email they read along with your 2 cents. You usually get between 3-10 emails a day, it doesn't seem like a alot but its almost free money. You also get $10 if you sign up right now. I've been doing it for a while and I'm alot happier with it then most of the other sites I've heard of that i like this. Plus you get paid every $25. They can't wire the money to a bank account though, which kinda sucks. But all in all I'd check it out and see what you think.

How to get broadcom 43xx wireless cards to work

I finally figured out how to get your broadcom 43xx cards to work. This was a big problem for me since both of my computers have broadcom cards. Follow the following to get them to work.

1. First thing you wanna do is change the repositories so that 3rd party applications are in them, the way you do this is to go to System, Administration, synaptic package manager. Click on the Repositories tab and check every one(i don't check source code since I'm not a programmer and would be useless to me)
2. Now open a terminal
3. Type in "sudo apt-get update" (this finds all the updates for everything that is installed in your Linux partition)
4. Then type in "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" (this installs all the updates you just got)
5. Finally type "sudo apt-get install bcm43xx-fwcutter" it will ask you if it can install the drivers for your card, hit enter(yes) and you now have a working wireless card.

If anyone has any problems just leave a comment and I'll try to help or at least point you in the right direction

Workspaces for windows

Again after using Linux for a while i got used to having 4 workspaces or desktops. So i stumbled upon these 2 programs, Virtuawin and This one that some guy made himself. I tried the one without a name, and its alright, still not like the Linux one. I didn't like how it didn't have an installer which, for some reason I've been coming across a lot. But with Virtuawin i don't like how the icon is in the taskbar to the right in that thing that shows running processes. maybe I'll find some more and post them here, so check back later if you don't like either of those either

Edit: Another one is Virtual Desktops but it cost $14.95 and its made my Stardock, I don't trust them.

Beryl like application for windows

So after installing Linux and failed because i didn't make the partition big enough. I thought maybe i can make windows like Linux. So i found this program called Yod'm. It makes your desktop into a cube and creates 3 more desktops like "workspaces" in Linux. It wasn't as awesome as beryl though, and it took up more resources. This brought me to the other program on that website called Visual Tooltip. Its another "start menu" or "taskbar" for windows, instead of their ghetto one windows comes with. some other programs that are similar are Toy'd and Medotate. Medotate isn't a cube but it makes it so you can make your windows go flat and look 3D. I used it for a while and it was a pretty good and useful program, just wish the button you click to flatten the window didn't look so shitty.

Wifi Problem

So since the new Ubuntu version, Feisty fawn came out today, i decided I'd try it on my computer. But my brother forgot the cd-rom, and both of mine suck. So i decided to try to run it on my laptop. everything seemed to be good until we tried the internet. Of course the Wireless adapter doesn't work, wasn't surprised really. So the first thing we thought was ndiswrapper. But that was a bitch, a HUGE bitch. So we found a guy on the Ubuntu forum that made his own program to fix this bullshit. The only thing that sucks, is it only connects at 11Mbps, so if you want more your gonna have to use ndiswrapper.

Sound Problem

Lucky the sound problem wasn't as bad, even though if you search on the Ubuntu forum you'll think it is. Apparently the Realtek ALC883 has some problems with Linux, but not a very big one. All you have to do is enable "surround."

Follow the steps below to enable "surround."
1. Open terminal and type in "alsamixer" and it will bring up a ghetto GUI.
2. Use the right and left arrow keys to select "surround" hit "m" to activate it (the 2 capital m's at the bottom should change to 2 green arrows).
3. When you turn it on the sound will be off so you have to use the up and down arrows to change the volume.
Hopefully this will help some people fix the common problems

Update Your computer programs

I don't know why i didn't post this earlier but filehippo.com released a beta program that updates all your computer applications. It really doesn't have a name but i guess its called Filehippo update checker. I've never really found a good updater for windows until now, Linux on the other hand already has a bad ass one built in. You can have it search any directory on your computer by running the program and clicking settings, It even tells you about Beta programs. All in all its an awesome program.

Mozbackup

I just stumbled apon a useful program, Mozbackup. It exports your Mozilla profile so you can import it to a new computer. It comes in handy if you want to reinstall windows, or if you just got a new computer. I know this would have helped me when i got my laptop, instead i had to reinstall all my extensions again which took forever.

A while back when i had a verizon phone that was locked down like no other. So i wanted to get ringtones and wallpaper for free. So i did some googleing and found Tonethis. Basically it just lets you use images or songs from your computer and make them into a ringtone/wallpaper for free. it supports most phone companies, but not all.

Another site i just found is Phone sherpa. Where you can buy ringtones, but forget that. The important part is you can set up a "shop" there and make your own ringtones/wallpaper and you can sell them. If you pay them more you'll get more money in return, but their is a free account.

Rasterbator

A while back i saw an awesome program called Rasterbator. What is does is you get an image (online or on your computer) and upload it to Rasterbator and then you tell it how big you want the print out and it splits the image up into multiple pieces of paper for when you print it out. Then after you print it out you can tac them to your wall in the right oder so its like having a huge poster cut up into pieces. It's kinda cool to leave spaces in between each peice of paper when you hang it up too, makes it look different. Since i have a ton of posters i thought this was awesome. I haven't tried it yet, do it me having a crappy printer, but when i get a good one i'll print something awesome and post it. Oh and you can download the program, it has a bit more options (more pieces of paper, different colors. e.t.c.) it's almost not worth it unless you really, really want a huge poster

Gaiaonline cheat

Anyone heard of www.Gaiaonline.com it’s basically a site where you make an avatar and you read forums make houses, buy clothes to dress you avatar in. Well…one of the ways you make money is by just surfing the site(refreshing) So i found this nifty extension for firefox that lets you reload in a certain amount of sec,min,hour, whatever you set it to. the extension is called Reload Every 2.0. I use to use the extension and had it set to reload every 15 seconds, and had it funny for about half a year. But just last month i was caught and banned. So use at your own risk, but i’d set it for more then 15 seconds, idk if that’s how they caught me, but it could be a possibility.

How to boost your wireless Wifi Range

So i finally got a Router for my new house. I got a Linksys WRT54GL, as most know this router is bad ass. So the first thing i did after hooking it up is surf the web and find some interesting things i could do with it. One that caught my eye is one mentioned on Lifehacker. It required you to change the Xmit power to around 70-100mW. The default is 28mW and the cap is 251mW but 28 is too small and 251 would light your router on fire. So i choose to set mine at 70 because i heard that if you put it too high it actually shortens your wifi range. Oh and you have to upgrade the firmware on the router in order to be able to do this, you can find the firmware here.
